mother: how many cigarettes do you smoke?
son: not many. only about two a day.
mother:
i’m not sure i agree with that. i think you smoke more than five a day. you smoke before you go to school and you usually have two cigarettes in the evening, so i know that you smoke more than two a day.
son: how do you know how many i smoke?
mother:
well, i’m your mother. i live with you and see you every day.
son:
all my friends smoke. what’s wrong with cigarettes? they’re better than drugs!
mother:
but they are drugs!in fact, they are so dangerous that millions of people die every year as a result of cigarette smoking.
son: you can’t be serious.
mother:
i am serious. and even if it doesn’t kill you, you can get illnesses and diseases from smoking. did you know that a quarter of young people who smoke more than ten cigarettes a day will die prematurely as a result of smoking?
son: i don’t agree with you. none of my friends have got diseases.
mother:
yes, but they’re young. the diseases will come later. anyway, that isn’t quite true. you’ve already got a bad cough.
son: yes, i know. i cough a lot at night.
mother: would you like me to help you stop smoking?
son: it’s not easy to stop. can you really help me?
mother:
yes, i can. remember, i stopped smoking five years ago, so i know it isn’t easy. but it’ll be easier now than when you are older.
son: yeah, i would like to stop. but when i’m with my friends i always want a cigarette.
mother:
the first thing to do is to keep away from people who smoke for a few weeks.
son: what!not see my friends!i can’t do that!
mother:
it’s the only way. and it will only be for a few weeks.
son: what will i do?
mother:
you must keep busy. do something new. then you won’t think about smoking. why don’t you join the sports club. it’ll help you to forget about cigarettes.
son: ok. i will think about it.
