撿垃圾的老外
路乞,英文名k.l.rothey,今年65歲,現在武漢新東方學校任教。這位美國老頭給自己起的中文名叫“路乞”,意思就是“路邊的乞丐”。路乞和志愿者所到之處,煙頭、廢紙等各種垃圾立刻被“請進”垃圾桶,少了它們的“點綴”,道路轉眼間變得整潔起來。行走中,一些行人也被他們感染。來市區辦事的郭婕,毫不猶豫地加入了撿垃圾的行列……她說:“我真后悔沒把女兒帶來受受教育。”
路乞說:“我認為撿垃圾的乞丐做的是愛護環境的工作,是很高尚、很重要的工作。”當然,乞丐并不是路乞的職業。退休前,他是一位法律工作者,現在的名片上印著“法學博士”。1984年他第一次因公來到中國,從此對中國文化產生濃厚興趣,先后來華50余次。去年9月他來到湖北省黃石市,與該市女書法家孟順波共結連理,定居中國。
居住黃石期間,他走在路上看到垃圾就撿,讓夫人十分不解。路乞說:“我重視我的‘環境’。黃石是我的生活環境,我只是希望它更干凈、更美好。”路乞也許不懂“身體力行”、“潛移默化”等中國成語,卻用實際行動感動著他身邊的人。在黃石,已有數百名志愿者跟他一起,不定期地做著撿拾垃圾、宣傳環保的工作。路乞把它稱作“五意工程”(義務、意識、意志、意氣、毅力)。
