▲hold on 堅持，等一等，別掛斷（電話）相當(dāng)于hang on 或wait.
（1）hold on .i’ll just get my coat.等一等，我去把大衣拿來。
（2）can you hold on ?i’ll just see if he’s in.請等一下，我去看他是否在。
2. i’d rather see a cartoon. 我寧愿看卡通片。
▲i’d rather. = i would rather.寧愿，寧可，相當(dāng)于i would prefer to .
（1）i’d rather not say anything.我寧愿什么也不說。
（2）i’d rather take the slowest train than go there by air.
我寧愿坐最慢的火車，也不乘飛機(jī)去那兒。
注：would rather與would prefer雖然詞義都作“寧愿”解，但用法不同。因此它們不能簡單地進(jìn)行互換。
a. would prefer后接帶to的動詞不定式，而would rather則要求接不帶to 的動詞不定式。如：
（1）i’d rather be out playing football.我寧可出去踢足球。
（2）i would perfer to work.我寧愿工作。
（3）i would prefer to wait until evening.我寧愿等到晚上。
另外，would prefer還可以接名詞和動名詞，而would rather卻沒有這種用法。
i’d prefer a cup of tea. 我寧愿來一杯茶。
b. would prefer與would rather的另一個區(qū)別，就是前者可以跟賓語+帶to 的動詞不定式（賓語補(bǔ)足語），即would prefer + sb.+to +v，而would rather卻沒有這種用法。
（1）“may i wash the dishes?”“i’d prefer you to dry them.”
“我可以洗盤子嗎？”“我倒愿意讓你把它們擦干。”
（2）i’d prefer him to paint the door blue.我寧愿他把門漆成藍(lán)色。
