當說話人所說的話不是事實，而是一種假設、愿望、懷疑或推測時，要用虛擬語氣。表示與現在事實相反，動詞用過去式；表示與過去事實相反，動詞用過去完成式。
he passed the soldiers as if they didn’t exit.
他經過那些士兵，仿佛他們都不存在。
they talked as if they had been friends for years.
他們談話時好像他們已經是多年的朋友一樣。
當說話人要表達真實意思時，要用陳述語氣。

特別提示
as if從句的時態不受主句支配，當主、從句同時，從句用一般過去時；當主、從句同時，并正在進行，用過去進行時；從句動作發生于主句之前，用過去完成時。
