1.in order to / so as to / in order that
(1). he got up early in order to / so as to catch the first bus.
(2). he got up early so that he could catch the first bus.
(3). (in order) to catch the first bus, he got up early.
2. similarity (n) /similarly (adv) /similar (adj)
(1).be similar in 在某方面不同 be similar to 和 ….類似
the twins are similar in character.
the two boy dress similarly. tom’s composition is similar to yours.
1. upside down / inside out
(1). the picture was put up upside down on the wall. / he was holding the book upside down. (2).the careless boy is wearing his t-shirt inside out. /he hurried to the classroom in the morning, with his coat inside out.
3. various (adj) /variety (n) /vary (v)
(1). the prices of the vegetables vary with the seasons. / opinions vary on this point. (2).we should eat a large variety of food to keep a balanced diet. (3). our hobbies are many and various. / they quitted the club for various reasons.
4. preference / prefer
(1). it’s a matter of personal preference. (2). i have a preference for bananas. (3). i prefer bananas to apples. / i prefer playing basketball than watching tv. (4). prefer to do … rather than do(5). prefer sb to do (6).prefer that sb (should) do
5. turn up/off/down/to/out/over
(1). there was no one to whom she could turn for help.
(2).it has past 8 o’clock, but our teacher hasn’t turned up.
(3).please turn off the tv when you leave the room.
(4).the boy turns over most of the money he earns to his mother.
(5). my suggestion was turned down by them finally.
(6). the exam turned out to be very easy.

6. back out 決定部履行（承諾的事）
(1). he lost confidence and backed out at the last moment.
(2). it’s too late to back out (of the deal) now.
