2、主句為過去時態時，直接引語一般作相應的變化，這就叫所謂的“時態的呼應”。
1）、一般現在時變為一般過去時。
e.g. he said, “i’m sorry.”
he said he was sorry.
2）現在進行時變為過去進行時。
e.g. she said, “he’s waiting.”
she said he was waiting.
3）現在完成時變為過去完成時。
e.g. he said, “you haven’t changed much.”
he said that i hadn‘t changed much.
4）一般過去時變為過去完成時。
e.g. he said, “the man came at six.”
he said that the man had come at six.
5）一般將來時變為過去將來時。
e.g. she said, “i will do it after class.”
she said that she would do it after class.
6）過去完成時不變。
e.g. he said, “i had finished my homework.”
he said that he had finished his homework.
注：直接引語如果是客觀真理，變為間接引語時時態不變。
e.g. the teacher told us, “the earth moves around the sun.”
the teacher told us that the earth moves around the sun.
