when引導一個時間狀語從句時，意為：當……的時候（at the time when），when的時間狀語從句可以表示某個時刻，也可以表示一段時間。例如：
i was walking along the stream when i met my teacher of english.
當我沿著小溪散步時遇到了英語老師。
it was raining when we arrived.
我們到達時，天正下著雨。
he always comes on those days when i am busy.
他總在我忙的日子來。
it happened when i was living in the country.
這事發生在我住在農村的時候。
while也可以引導一個時間狀語從句，但while引導的時間狀語從句表示“一段較長的時間”；例如：
the telephone rang while i was in the garden.
我在花園里的時候電話鈴響了。
i read it while you were drying your hair.
你在干發的時候我讀了它。
while i was in italy i went to see alessandro.
當我在意大利的時候去看了alessandro。
i thought i heard him come in while we were having dinner.
我想我在吃飯的時候聽到他進來了。
---- i’m going to the post office.我要到郵局去了。
--- while you’re there can you get me some stamps?你在那兒的時候能不能買幾張郵票？
（2）關于過去進行時
a. 過去進行時表示過去某一時刻或過去的某一段時間里正在發生的動作。
b. 過去進行時的構成：助動詞was/ were＋動詞-ing。
注意：過去進行時中的助動詞was/ were有人稱和數的變化，使用時要注意主謂的人稱和數的對應（對應要求見下面的表格）。
c. 表示“過去的某個時刻”可以用when引導的時間狀語從句或短語，如：this time yesterday, at that time, then, at 9:00 yesterday等表示；表示“過去的某段時間”可以用while引導的時間狀語從句表示；例如：
---- what were you doing this time yesterday?昨天的這個時候你在做什么？
----i was watching tv.我正在看電視。
when i was watering the garden, it began to rain.
當我在花園澆水時，突然下雨了。
while we were having a party, the lights went out.
當我們正舉行聚會時，燈突然滅了。
d. 過去進行時的陳述句、疑問句和否定句形式。（以do為例）
