  <詞語辨析>

  1. valued;valuable,invaluable,priceless;valueless,worthless (adj. )

  valued是形容詞,意思是“貴重的;受到很高評價(jià)的;被尊重的”,同時(shí)也是動(dòng)詞value的過去分詞。

  valuable有兩個(gè)意思,一個(gè)是“貴重的,值錢的(worth a lot money)”;另一個(gè)意思是“很有用的,很有價(jià)值的,很重要的(very useful or worth-while or important)”。invaluable意思是“極有價(jià)值的,極寶貴的(extremely valuable)”。priceless意思是“無價(jià)的,極珍貴的(so valuable that it is difficult to give a financial value)”。由此可以知道,valuable,invaluable,priceless 三個(gè)詞意義相近,程度上有所不同。

  valueless與worthless是近義詞,二者都指“無價(jià)值的,無用的(having no value, importance or use)”。另外,worthless還可以指“(人)一無是處的,不中用的”。

  2. deserve doing;deserve to do

  動(dòng)詞deserve指“應(yīng)受,應(yīng)得;值得”,其后可以跟v-ing或動(dòng)詞不定式作賓語,但表達(dá)的意義不同。v-ing作deserve的賓語時(shí),v-ing具有被動(dòng)含義,也就是說,句子主語是該動(dòng)作的承受者。例如:

  they deserved punishing. (=to be punished) 他們應(yīng)當(dāng)受懲罰。

  the old woman deserves looking after. 這位老大娘應(yīng)當(dāng)受到照顧。

  當(dāng)動(dòng)詞不定式作deserve的賓語時(shí),不定式具有主動(dòng)意義,也就是說,句子的主語就是動(dòng)作的施動(dòng)者。例如:

  she deserved to win because she was the best. 她應(yīng)當(dāng)贏,因?yàn)樗亲顑?yōu)秀的。

  students brave enough to at-tempt the course deserve to succeed. 凡有足夠勇氣選這門課程的學(xué)生一定能獲得成功。

  【拓展】英語中其他三個(gè)動(dòng)詞need、require、want也要求其后的動(dòng)名詞采用主動(dòng)形式來表示被動(dòng)意義,這一點(diǎn)和deserve的情況相似。要想表達(dá)被動(dòng)意義,也可以在其后跟動(dòng)詞不定式的被動(dòng)式。
