誤：there are many high buildings along the coasts of the huangpu river.
正：there are many high buildings along the banks of the huangpu river.
精析 漢語中的“岸”，英語中有bank, beach, coast和shore四種說法。bank專指“河岸”；beach指“海岸”，尤指供人們游泳的海邊浴場的“沙灘”；coast指邊界的“海岸地區”；shore指緊靠江河湖海岸邊的“陸地”。
例4因為下大雨，他只好呆在家里。
誤：he had to stay at home because the heavy rain.
正：he had to stay at home because of the heavy rain.
正：he had to stay at home because it rained heavily.
精析 because of和because都作“由于、因為”解，但前者是復合介詞，后接名詞（短語）、動名詞或代詞作狀語，不能接從句；而后者是從屬連詞，后接從句。
例5這種人很難相處。
誤：this kind of men are difficult to get along with.
正：this kind of men is difficult to get along with.
精析 “kind(s)/from(s)/type(s)of＋”名詞（單數或復數）”結構作主語時，謂語的單復數由kind, form, type的單復數而定。
例6一個工程師是男是女那有很大關系嗎？
誤：does that matter if an engineer is a man or a woman?
正：does it matter if an engineer is a man or a woman?
精析 雖然口語中有時出現“does that matter?”之類的句子，但一般說來多用it充當matter的主語，尤其后接whether或if從句。如：
does ______ matter if he can’t finish the job on time?
a.this b.that c.he d.it
最佳答案為d。
