the chinese lunar new year
the chinese new year begins on january 1st of the lunar calendar. it is also called spring festival. a few days before the new year, everyone becomes busy preparing for it. they do spring cleaning and decorate their houses. they go shopping for food ,new clothes as well as presents.
on new year’s eve, family members gather together for new year’s eve dinner. people eat various kinds of delicious food, such as chicken, roast duck, fried fish, prawns, and dumplings. many people stay up until midnight, watching the new year gala evening programme on cctv. when the clock strikes twelve, people welcome the coming of the new year by setting off firecrackers and fireworks. however, setting off firecrackers is not allowed now in big cities because it is not safe.
