【句法分析】 this was a time when...有一段時期，when引導定語從句，不能換成which。因為when在從句中作狀語，而which在從句中作主語或賓語。

并列句
◆什么是并列句
并列句由兩個或兩個以上的簡單句構成，這些簡單句通過并列連詞或表并列關系的副詞連接，有時也可以用分號連接，它們在整個句子中的地位是平等的，沒有主從之分，互不依從。
◆主要并列關系
并列句一般由三種方式連接而成，連詞、連接副詞和分號。一般來說，只有當兩個分句之間的關系比較明確時，才會只用分號(不用連詞)連接，而大多數情況下都需要使用并列連詞或副詞進行連接。因此，要正確地表達出句子之間的并列關系，就必須熟悉并掌握英語中常見的表示各種并列關系的連詞和副詞。
英語中主要的并列關系及常用連詞或副詞參見下表：

【分析】 以上兩句均屬于并列句。第①句由or連接，兩個并列分句之間是選擇關系；第②句由but連接，兩個并列分句之間是轉折關系。

①either you improve your work or i shall dismiss you.(選擇關系)
②not only did he speak more correctly，but also he spoke more easily.(并列關系)
【分析】 以上兩句均屬于并列句。第①句由either...or...連接，兩個并列分句之間是選擇關系；第②句由not only...but also...連接，兩個并列分句之間是并列關系。
