reading and vocabulary
teaching aims:
1. students can get the main points by listening to the conversation.
2. students can get the details by reading and guessing in the context in pairs.
3. students will feel more confident and prouder of their hometown.
emphasis:
get the students to grasp the new words and learn to speak using the new words and expressions.
difficult point: get the students to guess the meanings of the new words in the context and paraphrase some sentences.
teaching methods: communicative, interactive, task-based
teaching process:
i. daily report about their tour memory.
ii. lead-in.
t: what do you know about xiamen?
t: what information do you want to get about xiamen if you want to visit the city?
t: listen to the conversation and find out the items they mention.
iii. listening.
write down the items into their notebooks and share with the whole class.
iv. reading.
1. read for details and finish off the exercises on the screen by discussing in pairs.
check their answers.
2. what causes the difficulty when you are reading?
1) students give examples of some words and sentences.
2) students talk about the paraphrasing exercises in pairs or in groups to make sure of their meanings.
paraphrase these sentences ─ competition
1. it’s been six years since we last saw each other.
2. it can be quite cold in the winter.
3. they can be a nuisance in the summer.
4. it’s a gorgeous island with some really interesting architecture.
5. now we are approaching the harbor.

3. students go through the passage to see whether they still have some other difficulties.
v: thinking.
take xiamen as example, and think what makes a city lively and attractive?
(a lively city usually has more chances. our hometown, harbin, is going to welcome the world’s college students winter games.)
vi: role-play.
suppose one of your foreign friends comes to harbin and he/she may know something or nothing about harbin. as a local citizen, try to introduce what is special about harbin to him/her.

vi: homework: write an essay introducing your hometown, harbin.
