辨析:
destroy“徹底毀壞”,不能修復(fù)使用,有毀滅的意思。
ruin “破壞,毀壞”,與destroy 接近,但程度稍輕。
damage “損壞”,可重新修好使用。
spoil“損壞”,把某物毀壞或破壞某種氣氛而令人不快。

the houses were destroyed by a fire.
房子被大火燒毀了。

happen/occur/take place/break out
happen 指事情發(fā)生帶有偶然性和無預(yù)見性。
occur 既可指某事偶然發(fā)生, 也指按計(jì)劃使某事發(fā)生,所指的時(shí)間和事件比較準(zhǔn)確,當(dāng)以具體事物或事件為主語時(shí),可以與happen互換。
take place 一般指按照事先安排或計(jì)劃而發(fā)生,不能指偶然發(fā)生。
break out 主要指戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)、天災(zāi)等的突然發(fā)生。
the july 7th incident happened in 1937.
七七事變發(fā)生在1937年。
they decided that the meeting should take place on monday.
他們決定會(huì)議星期一開。
a fire broke out during the night.
大火發(fā)生在夜里。
a leap year occurs at four times.
