Chapter 7 The Phantom of the Opera

teaching plan
topic: chapter 7 the phantom of the opera
teaching aims:
1. to enable the students to learn something about music and the retelling of a famous story, the phantom of the opera.
2. to help the students to learn how to take notes about the life of sb.
3. to help students to have a good command of the use of adj.
4. to learn how to hold a group discussion.
5. to inform students of filling in forms
6. to practise constructing a story from different sources
7. to provide students with a series of additional reading and listening tasks related to thetopic of the text.

the 1st period
aims:
1. the names of some musical instruments and the types of music
2. the general idea of the text
warm-up
1. questions for students:
a.have you ever attended any concert or opera before?
b. have you ever attended any concert during the spring festival or not?
2.there are quite a lot of music instruments and types of music.
have a discussion of the types of music and their favorite music instruments in the form of “brain storm”.
the names of the instruments may include:
drums, piano, guitar, banjo, violin, harp (豎琴), lute (琵琶), harmonica (mouth organ), cello (大提琴), double bass (低音提琴), organ, accordion (手風琴), saxophone, synthesizer (合成器), trumpet, tuba (大號), clarinet (豎笛, 單簧管, 黑管), oboe (雙簧管), flute, pipe, recorder, etc.
the types of music may include:
symphony, concerto, opera, jazz, rock, pop, folk, choral,classical, rap, blues, gospel (福音), etc.
3. enjoy the songs: think of me by christine  (sarah brightman)

4.what do you know about …?
look at the picture of the opera and label it with the words from the box.
1. the conductor
2. the audience
3. a singer
4. the stage
5. the orchestra
5.text: the phantom of the opera
1.look at the pictures on page 89 and guess what is happening.
2.listen to the tape and try to finish “skimming” and “scanning”.
(read the questions first.)
3.write some questions on the blackboard.
students will be invited to read the text again to answer the following questions.
(1)   where did the phantom live? 
(inside the paris opera house.)
(2)   why did the phantom teach christine how to sing? 
(he attracted christine and wanted her for himself.)
(3)    why did the phantom freed raoul and christine?
(because christine kissed the phantom, which made him happy.)
4. finish exercise a b on page 88
