1. the paris opera house was a huge building.
something or someone that is huge is extremely large in size.
...a tiny little woman with huge black glasses...    
 = massive  
≠ tiny 
2.  inverted order:
underneath the building there was a strange, dark lake.
→there was a strange, dark lake underneath the building.
 on that island, one hundred years ago, lived the phantom.
→the phantom lived on that island one hundred years ago.
一百多年前， 在這個島上居住著一個幽靈。
介詞結構前置構成的倒裝：一般說來， 句子的規范語序應該為：主語+謂語的結構，但是當某些特殊結構在句首出現時， 謂語置于主語之前， 我們把這種現象稱為倒裝。倒裝分為完全倒裝和部分倒裝兩種，本句是一句完全倒裝。
完全倒裝的結構：提前成分+謂語+主語
表示地點的介詞詞組用于句首構成完全倒裝：
   ①by her side stood her granddaughter.
在她的邊上站著她的孫女。
    ②in the middle of the island lies a five-star hotel.
   在這座島的中央有一家五星級賓館。
③behind this house there is a newly built supermarket.
  在這幢房子后面是一家新建的超市。
paragraph 2
1.    he was so ugly that his own mother made him wear a mask.
make sb do sth/ have sb do sth/ let sb do sth
→he was ugly enough to be made to wear a mask by his mother.
2.     while:
a. if something happens while something else is happening, the two things are happening at the same time.
   i was watching tv while he was reading a book this time yesterday.
  b.you use while at the beginning of a clause to introduce information which contrasts with information in the main clause.
the first two services are free, while the third costs £35.00.
 bill can speak japanese while i can’t.
c.while  n.   =a length of time
i haven't seen him for a while (= for a long time).
i'll be fine in a while (= soon).
