至于南瓜燈也至少有兩種說法。一種說是人挖空了南瓜又刻上鬼臉,點上燭火以驅散鬼魂的;另一種說是鬼魂點上燭火,試圖騙取人們上當而跟著鬼魂走,所以人們就在南瓜表面上刻上一個嘲諷的臉面,用以嘲笑鬼魂。傳說因為首先用南瓜的是一位愛爾蘭人jack,所以人們又將鬼臉南瓜燈叫做jack-o-lantern.
