1) be likely to do sth. 很可能(發生某種情況) our team is likely to win the game. 這場比賽我們隊很可能贏。
2) it is likely that + 從句 it is likely that we’ll go on a picnic in the forest tomorrow. 很可能明天我們去森林里野餐。
辨析：likely，probable與possible:
* likely系常用詞，指“從表面現象看很有可能”。
* possible指“由于有適當的條件和方法，某事可能發生或做到”，強調“客觀上有可能”，但“實際希望很小”。
* probable語氣比possible強，指“有根據、合情理、值得相信的事物，帶有‘大概’、‘很可能’”的意思。
* likely之后常跟不定式 (be likely to do sth.)，而possible，probable之后通常不跟不定式；likely的主語可以是人，而possible，probable的主語不能是人。
the hurricane is likely to come. 颶風可能要來。/ it is possible to go to the moon now. 現在有可能登上月球。/ i don't think the story is probable. 我不認為這個故事合情合理。

1) set up: (1) 豎立起來 let's set up the tent first. 我們先把帳篷搭起來。(2) 建立，成立 edison set up a chemical lab of his own at the age of ten. 愛迪生10歲就建立了他自己的化學實驗室。(3) 使(自己或他人)從事某職業 (as) he has set himself up as a bookseller. 他開始經營書籍。
辨析：set off與set out
set off與set out這兩個動詞短語都有“出發”和“動身”的意思，都可以解釋為start to move或begin a journey。
set off的原意是“使爆炸” (cause to explode)；set out的原意是“著手做” (begin work with the intention of achieving a particular aim)。
注意：set out在用來表示“著手做”時，后面總是跟動詞不定式。the slightest spark can set off the explosives stored here. 一點點火星就能夠使儲存在這里的火藥爆炸。/ the journalist immediately set out to obtain these important facts, but he took a long time to send them. 那位新聞記者立即著手去獲得這些重要的資料，但是他把這些資料寄來卻用了很長時間。

① 作“當……的時候”解，引導時間狀語從句，表示從句動作與主句動作同時發生、同時進行。as he looked at her she made a face. 他看她時，她作了個鬼臉。/ he sang as he walked. 他一邊走，一邊唱。
