★rest on停放，依靠
her elbows rested on the table。她的胳膊支在桌面上。
our hope rests on you.我們的希望在你身上。
★while closing the eyes 和as if sleeping在句中分別相當(dāng)于while one is closing the eyes和as if one were sleeping。像這樣的“從屬連詞 + 動詞-ing形式 / 動詞過去分詞”的結(jié)構(gòu)一般可以看作是省略了主語和be的某種形式的狀語從句。這個被省略的主語就是句子的主語。有這種用法的從屬連詞還有：when, as soon as, once, although, though, as though, if, even if, unless等。如：
i scanned time magazine while waiting （=while i was waiting） at the doctor's.
在診所等的時候，我翻看《時代》雜志。
she sat down at her desk and began moving papers around as if looking for （=as if she was looking for） something. 她在自己桌子旁坐下，開始到處翻動文件，好像在找什么東西。
be careful when crossing the street.過馬路時要小心。
★as if/as though 是從屬連詞,意義用法相同,用來引導(dǎo)方式狀語從句,意為“好像”。
1） as if / as though 引出的方式狀語從句如果是事實或者可能性較大,多用陳述語氣,常和look, seem, taste, smell, sound 等詞搭配。如：
it looks as if it is going to rain. 看起來好象要下雨。
it seems as if the boy has lost his way. 那個男孩好象迷路了。
2） as if/ as though 引出的方式狀語從句所表示的情況若不是事實,而是主觀上的想象或夸大性比喻,通常用虛擬語氣。如：
the young man with long hair looks as if he were a woman.
這位留著長發(fā)的男青年看上去好象是個女的。
he walks as if he were drunk. 他走路的樣子好象是喝醉了。
8. get through
1）表示“接通電話”
i tried to telephone you but i couldn't get through. 我要打電話給你，但打不通。
2）表示“完成（工作）”：have you got through your homework?你做完作業(yè)了嗎？
3）表示“通過（考試）”：they have all got through the examination. 他們?nèi)ㄟ^了考試
4）表示 “把錢（花光）”
he got through all the money in a week. 他一周內(nèi)花光了所有的錢。
5） 表示“成功地熬過”
i can't think how they will get through the time. 我不能想象這段時間他們怎樣熬過去。
9. tear down
1） 拆毀,拆掉
they are tearing down the old building in order to build a new one.
為了建新房子,他們正在拆掉老樓。
2） 撕下來,扯下來：he tore down the notice. 他撕下了通知。
3） 拆卸開：tear down the engine.拆卸開發(fā)動機。
★拓展：tear sth. in half/two 撕成兩半 =tear sth. into halves
tear sth into pieces 撕成碎片 tear sth up 撕碎,撕毀
he couldn't tear himself away from the book. 他舍不得放下那本書。
