他們不知道三秒鐘前他們經歷了什么事。
1）what happened to them 是個賓語從句，作know的賓語。
注意賓語從句應用陳述語序。

我忘了他叫什么名字。 i forget .
我想知道昨天他為什么沒來。
i want to know yesterday.
2）happen為不及物動詞，意為“發生”，往往以物作主語，通常須加介詞to
后面加sb. happen to sb.意為“某人發生（情況，尤指不幸的事）。

昨晚她出了一場車禍。a traffic accident last night.
他怎么了？ what ?
