1) what is usually weighed with a balance? what goes into the scales left and right?
a balance is used to weigh things you want to sell. the goods for sale go into the right scale, and the weight goes into the left scale.
2) why does portia ask shylock whether he brought a balance?
portia asks shylock whether he brought scales to make sure that he can only take exactly a pound of flesh from antonio.
3) what is the deeper meaning of the balance? what is weighed in portia’s court of law?
the deeper meaning of the balance is to weigh the arguments of shylock against the defense of antonio. to pass judegment, the judge must find the right balance. it is the question what is fair and just that is really weighed in portia’s court.

e.g: they had no mercy on their prisoners.
= no mercy was shown to the prisoners.
2.it is useless trying to argue with shylock . 試圖跟夏洛克講道理是沒有用的。
(1) 在這個句型中it 是形式主語，后面的動名詞或者動名詞短語是真正的主語。能以動名詞作主語的這類句子比較少，主要用在以no point , no use , no good 等作表語的句子中。例如：
it‘s no use talking without acting . = it’s useless talking without acting . 光說不干是沒有用的。
(2) it 作形式主語用在it‘s a waste of time + ing 的句子中。例如：
it’s just a waste of time talking to him .
(3) 動名詞作主語還可用于there + be + no use ( good , point ) + ing 句型中，例如：there‘s no use talking about it . = it’s no use talking about it .

(2) a is倍數(shù)as big (,long , high , wide ) as b
asia is four times as large as europe .亞洲是歐洲的四倍大。（= 亞洲比歐洲大三倍。）
(3) a is倍數(shù)bigger (longer , higher ) than b
the meeting-room is three times bigger than our office. 會議室比我們的辦公室大三倍。
