★ be well-known for，be well-known as及famous的異同 ▲be well known for和be well known as都有“以……而著稱”之意，但前者表示主語以某一方面著稱，而后者則意為主語作為一個整體以什么著稱。請閱讀下面例句，體會其中的差別：① martin luther king was well-known for fighting for equal rights for blacks.馬丁•路德金以為黑人的平等權利戰斗而著稱。② martin luther king was well-known as a freedom fighter. 馬丁•路德金以一名自由戰士而著稱。③ beijing is well-known for the great wall, the summer palace and some other places of interest.北京因長城、頤和園和其他名勝著稱。④beijing is well-known as a beautiful city. 北京以一個美麗的城市而著稱。⑤ lu xun was well-known for his essays.魯迅以他的雜文著稱。 ⑥ lu xun was well-known as a great writer and thinker. 魯迅作為一個偉大的作家和思想家而著稱。
【注】well-known的近義詞是famous。famous是個普通詞，使用最廣泛，多用于褒義。側重好名聲，語義比well-known強；讀上面的幾個例句中well-known可用famous替代。well-known通常與名聲好壞無關，也表示“廣為人知”。下面的句子中，well-known不能用famous替代。如：① it is well-known that bamboo shoot is a panda's main food.眾所周知竹筍是熊貓的主食。② it's a well-known fact that smoking can cause lung cancer. 吸煙可導致肺癌，這是眾所周知的事實。

★ 再談"be + of + 名詞”： 關于"be + of + 名詞”，我們在高二上冊已作過分析，這里我們從另一角度來闡述一下。介詞of在這里表人或物的特征，這是of的一種最常見的用法，只不過在這里是用在be動詞之后作表語。構成了我們所要談的這個結構，而在其他情況下，多用在名詞后作定語，也表示人或物的特征。如：① the work i am doing is of much value. 我做的工作很有價值。(表語) ② this is the work of much value. 這是一件很有價值的工作。(定語) ③ they were both of middle height. 他們兩人都是中等身材。(表語) ④ tom's father is a man of middle height. 湯姆的父親是中等身材。(定語) ⑤ the manager is of the same opinion. 經理也持同樣看法。(表語) ⑥ he is a man of progressive views.他是個有進步觀點的男子。(定語) ⑦ that's one true act of friendship. 這是一個真正的友好行動。(定語) ⑧ the act is of true friendship. 這個行動是真正友好的。(表語)
★ time
1) n. 常用復數。時代，時期，有時特指某些艱苦的時期。in modern times是一個固定詞組，意思是“在現代/近代”。time在指“時代”時常用復數。如：the times are different now。but he still lives in the past. 時代不同了，但他仍生活在過去。in ancient times, man lived on wild plants and wild beasts. 古代的人們靠野果和野獸生存。some people were lucky to have lived through the hard times of the war. 有些幸運的人從艱難的戰爭年代熬了過來。country music is one of the most popular music in modern times. 鄉村音樂是當今最流行的音樂之一。
