23. but in the twentieth century organizations were formed to give voice to groups that do not have a voice to speak for themselves. 但是在20世紀成立了一些組織為那些無法出聲說話的群體代言。(p. 31 第四段 第3行)
★ give voice to意為“提出(意見)”“吐露(感情)”。如:① only jack dared to give voice to his discontent.只有杰克敢于表達他的不滿。② he gave voice to his anger in his letter to me.他在給我的信中表達了他的憤怒。
【注】有關voice的詞組很多,常見的有:
raise one's voice放大聲音講話,
with one voice異口同聲地,
at the top of one's voice高聲地,
lose one's voice發不出聲音,
keep one's voice down說話聲要小一點等等。
如:① i don't want to have to raise my voice to you again. 我不想再對你大聲嚷嚷。② keep your voice down, and don't wake up the sleeping child.聲音小一點,不要吵醒熟睡的小孩。③ with one voice, they agreed to go on strike. 他們一致同意繼續罷工。④ he gave lessons at the top of his voice.他放開嗓門講課。⑤ i've got a bad cold, and i've lost my voice. 我得了重感冒,嗓子都發不出聲來了。
24. at first sight 乍一看, 初見之下 (p.32 tips 第一點)
at first sight their demands seemed reasonable. 乍看之下,他們的要求似乎是合理的。
拓展:與sight相關的常見短語:
(1) lose one's sight失去視力;喪失視力the poor boy lost his sight at the age of five. 這個可憐的男孩5歲時就失去了視力。
(2) catch sight of (突然)看見 i was walking along the country road when i caught sight of a fox catching a cock in its mouth. 我正在鄉間小路上走著,突然看見一只狐貍嘴里叼著一只公雞。
(3) lose sight of 看不見 we lost sight of the birds, for they flew high above the sky. 我們看不見那些鳥了,因為它們在天空中飛得很高。
(4) in/within sight在視野之內;看得見we looked to the south and the train was in/within sight. 我們向南望去,看見了那列火車。
(5) out of sight 在視野之外,看不見he stood at the airport and looked until the plane was out of sight in the sky.他站在機場上看著,直到飛機消失在空中。
(6) have good/bad/poor sight視力好,視力不好 have near/short sight患近視; i have good sight. 我視力很好。
