【注】 otherwise也可作“不同地…用別的方法”解。如： ④ she says it's true，but we think otherwise. 她說這是真的，但我們卻認為并非如此。⑤ i hate him but i pretend other- wise. 我恨他，但是我假裝不恨。⑥ i have never observed him do otherwise.我從未看到過他不是這樣做的。
【注】 otherwise可用作連詞，意為“否則”“要不然”，相當于or。如: ① hurry up, otherwise you'll be late. 快點，不然你要遲到了。② do what you have been told otherwise you'll be punished.照吩咐的去做，否則你將受罰。③ i'm lucky that i'm interested in school work, otherwise i'd go mad.很幸運我對學校里的功課感興趣，不然我要瘋掉的。
【注】 otherwise可作形容詞。如：①the fact is other- wise.真相并非如此。② their political enemies were also their otherwise friends. 他們的政敵在其他方面也正是他們的朋友。
▲ remain為連系動詞，意為“處于(某種狀態)”。后接形容詞性的詞作表語。① how can we remain silent on this question? 對這個問題我們怎么能保持沉默呢? ② the boundary questions still remain unsettled. 邊界問題仍然沒有解決。③ she remained sitting when they came in.他們進來時，她仍然坐著。
【注】remain也可以接名詞、代詞、介詞短語作表語。如：① this still remains a serious problem. 這仍然是一個嚴重的問題。② it remains below 13℃ for about five months of the year. 一年約有五個月那里溫度保持在13攝氏度以下。

▲ attempt的一些用法
(1) vt. 試圖做，試圖奪取(后跟名詞，不定式，動名詞等)the enemy attempted an attack by night. 敵人準備趁夜色偷襲。he attempted the examination but failed. 他試圖通過考試，但沒有成功。the enemy attempted to break through our lines. 敵人企圖沖破我們的防線。i attempted walking until i fell over.我掙扎著走路，直到摔倒才停止。
(2) n. 嘗試 (常為可數名詞) we failed in our attempt to climb the mountain. 我們試圖爬上山去，但失敗了。the two superpowers both collude and struggle with each other in a vain attempt to redivide the world. 這兩個超級大國又勾結，又爭奪，妄圖重新瓜分世界。
拓展：make an attempt to do sth. 試圖做某事；make an attempt at doing sth. 試圖做某事；make an attempt on... 企圖奪取……；
聯想：attempt vt. & n. 嘗試；attemptable adj.可以嘗試的

connect to意思是“與……相連接(有關)”，其后的介詞既可用to，也可以用with。如：① the police didn't connect him with the murder.警方沒有把他和兇殺案連在一起。② he is connected with the whites by marriage.他與懷特家是姻親。③ a search of brady's house found nothing that could connect them with the robberies.對布拉迪的房子的搜查沒有找到任何他與搶劫有關的內容。④ we usually connect spring with sunshine and flowers.我們通常把春天和陽光及鮮花聯系在一起。
