ⅰ. cup “杯子”通常指帶柄的瓷杯，用以喝茶、牛奶、咖啡或可樂等等。如：
① the cup stands on the table.杯子放在桌子上。
② will you have another cup of tea? 你要再喝一杯茶嗎？
ⅱ. glass “杯子”用以飲酒、或喝等。如：
① the glass is broken to pieces. 這只玻璃杯打碎了。
② he drank two gasses of milk. 他喝了兩杯牛奶。
§143 dear/ expensive/ high/;cheap/low
ⅰ. dear 表示“貴”的意思時和cheap相對，指索價過高。主語是物。如：
① it is too dear. 這太貴了。
② the flowers were not dear. 這些花我貴。
ⅱ. expensive “昂貴的”，指超過物品的價值或購買者的購買力。主語是物。如：
① it is too expensive for me to buy. 這東西太貴了我買不起。
② this is an expensive hat. 這是一頂價錢昂貴的帽子。
ⅲ. high 與low相對，主語是價格(the price), 如：
① the price of the pen is not low for him. 這支鋼筆對于他來說不便宜。
§144 decide/ determine/ make up one's mind
ⅰ.decide著重指經過考慮、商談或研究之后作出“決定”，“下決心”。結束躊躇、疑惑、爭論等狀況。后跟名詞、代詞、動詞不定式或從句，可用于被動語態中。如：
① nothing has been decided yet.什么都沒有決定下來。
② they decided to accept the invetation. 他們決定接受邀請
ⅱ.determine表示“決定、決心”指經過認真考慮后下定決心。與decide一般可換用。后接名詞、代詞動詞不定式。如：
① we determined on an early start.我們決定盡早出發。
② he has determined to learn english. 他已下決心學英語。
③ we are determined to get the work done before may day. 我們決心要在五一節前完成這項工作。
ⅲ.make up ine’s mind “決定、決心”，是和猶豫不決等相對應的用語。意即：打定主意。如：
① he made up his mind to go there at once. 他決定立刻到那兒去。
② he has made up his mind to be a dotctor. 他決心當醫生。
§145 deep/ deeply
ⅰ.作副詞用時，都有“深深地”之意，但deep用于具體的深度，包括時間和空間。而deeply用于抽象的、比喻的意義；再者deeply可以修飾形容詞和過去分詞，deep 則不能。如：
① they lived deep in the sea.他們深潛海里。
② i’m deeply sory for your uncle’s death. 為你叔叔的去世我深表遺憾。
§146 defend/ protect
ⅰ. defend “保衛、保護、捍衛”指采取積極措施以抵御或擊退外來的威脅或攻擊。它還可以表示“為……辯護”。如：
① it is the duty of every citizen to defend his country.保衛祖國是每一個公民的職責。
② he defended his comrades from harm. 他保護同志使其不受傷害。
③ they defended the fundamental principles of marxism-leninism. 他們捍衛了馬克思列寧主義的基本原則。
④ he made a long speech definding his ideas. 他發表長篇演說為他的見解辯護。
