  ▲play a trick on意為“捉弄”“開玩笑”，也可以說play sb. a trick。如：① he played her a bad trick by taking all her money. 他跟她開了個惡劣的玩笑，把她的錢全拿去了。② it never occurred to me that they were playing a trick on me.我從未想到他們是在捉弄我。③ they played a thousand tricks on him.他們千方百計地欺騙他。④ they are playing harmless tricks on one another. 他們正彼此毫無惡意地惡作劇。
  ▲call in作“找來”“請來”解，通常是指請醫生或警察。如：① call in a doctor at once. 馬上把醫生請來。② he insisted that we should call in a expert at this point. 這時他堅決主張我們去請一位專家來。
  ▲call in可作“來訪”“到……那里去”解。如：① he called in and told us that the machine had been badly damaged.他來告訴我們機器受到了嚴重損壞。② i formed the habit of calling in on them in the evenings.我每天晚上都到他們那里去，這已形成了習慣。
  ▲ call in還有“收回”之意。如：the librarians has called in all the books.圖書館管理員把書都收回去了。
  【注】call in作“來訪”解時，可看作不及物動詞，如表示“訪問某人”，要說call in on sb.。如：① could you call in on mum on your way home? 你能不能在回家的路上看看媽媽? ② i got into the habit of calling in on the bookstore on my way home. 我在回家的路上總要去書店看看，這已成了習慣。

▲ meet的用法歸納 (1) 遇；相見 let's meet for dinner. 我們一起吃晚飯吧。(2) 遭遇i met (with) a lot of difficulties in the work. 在工作中我遭遇了許多困難。 (3) 認識，被引見 come to the party and meet some interesting people.來參加聚會，認識一些有意思的人。(4) 迎接 the taxi will meet the train. 計程車將與火車接頭。(5) 滿足  does this meet your hopes? 這個滿足你的愿望了嗎?
  ▲ 辨析：meet與meet with
  *meet 往往暗示雙方從相反或不同的方向相對而行，其賓語通常是人或人格化的事物的名詞 (如：a person, a bus, a train, etc.)。
  *meet with 有“遭受，經歷”的含義，其后多接抽象名詞(如：accident，difficulty，misfortune，opposition，etc.)；meet with后也可接表示人的名詞，這時強調“遇到”的偶然性。此外，meet with常見的意思還有“迎見，會見”，這時可用meet取代。① i met your sister this morning. 我今天上午碰見了你姐姐。② the suggestion met with disfavour. 這項建議受到冷遇。③ he met (with) the prime minister of japan for an hour and a half. 他和日本首相會見了一個半小時。
