teaching procedures
step 1. revision
what kind of tv programmes does anita like / dislike?
what’s her favourite tv programme? why?
how long does she spend on watching tv every day?
what about philip or sam?
step 2. presentation
write down the follows words on the blackboard while the students answer the questions.
likes /s/ loves /z/ plays /z/ watches /iz/
sports /s/ animals /z/ tigers /z/ matches /iz/
when we add “ –(e)s” to the end of a word, we pronounce it in three different ways. it can be
pronounced /s/, /z/ or /iz/.
1. when a word ends in /p/, /f/, / /, /t/, or /k/, the new “ –(e)s” endings is pronounced /s/.
2. when a word ends in a vowel sound or voiced a consonant sound (except /z/, / / and / /)
the new “ –(e)s” ending is pronounced /z/.
3. when a word ends in /s/, /z/, / /, / / and / /, the new “ –(e)s” ending is pronounced /z/.
step 3. listening
listen to the words in part a on page 72 carefully, then practise saying them. write down the
list on the blackboard, pointing out which consonants are voiceless, which are voiced.
voiceless consonants: /p/, /s/, /k/, /f/, / /, / /, / /, /h/
voiced consonants: /b/, /z/, /g/, /v/, / /, / /, / /, /m/, /n/, / /, /l/, /r/, /j/, /w/
step 4. presentation & practice
there are some words with the different “ –(e)s”endings. first listen carefully, then say whether
the ending of the words are pronounced /s/, /z/ or /iz/.
then ask the students to complete part b on page 72 on their own, then check the answers.
step 5. consolidation
