Unit 4 TV programmes
what kind of tv programmes do you know? let’s think together, and i’ll tell you some more
and do some explanations.
1. cartoon – a cartoon is made up of a series of drawings. by photographying the drawings piece by piece and showing them in a rapid sequence, the characters on the drawings will look as if they are moving.
2. chat show – basically, chat shows do not focus on serious topics. guests at the show discuss their work and lives in a casual manner. in american english, a “chat show” is called a “talk show”.
3. documentary -- documentaries focus on things that happen in real life.
4. game show – a game show can also be called a quiz show if contestants answer a of
questions in the show.
5. drama series – a drama series is usually fictional. it is a set of programmes that deal with the
same subject or have the same characters.
6. comedy -- a comedy is intended to be funny. it usually has a happy ending.
step 3. practice
(1) the pictures of part a on page 64 represent different types of tv programmes. try to match the scenes with the correct types of programmes they represent.
answers: 1. comedy 2. game show 3. cartoon 4. documentary 5. chat show
6. drama series
(pay attention: picture 2 – game show, it is the corect answer because contestants often win
prizes at the game show.
(2) make the dialogue like this:
a: what kind of tv programmes do you like best?
b: i like documentaries best.
a: what is it? .
b: it focus on things things happen in real life. what about you?
a: i like comedies best. because they usually have happy endings.

try to find out what types of tv programmes do sandy and her friends like? why?

lives.
