★ be free to do sth. 意為“自由自在、不受拘束地做某事”。如：① you are free to go or stay as you please. 去或留隨你的便。② everyone is free to express himself. 每個(gè)人都可以暢所欲言。③ she is not free to marry because she has to look after her parents.她不能結(jié)婚，因?yàn)樗仨氄疹欕p親。④ she felt free when she left home and moved to the city. 他離開家鄉(xiāng)到城市后感到無拘無束。⑤ the prisoner will be set free next week. 那個(gè)囚犯在下周釋放。
【注】free還可解釋為“免費(fèi)的”，相當(dāng)于without payment of any kind，cost nothing。如：① "are the drinks free?" "no, you have to pay for them." “這些飲料是不是免費(fèi)的?”“不，你必須付錢�！� ② anyone who buys this breakfast food gets a free gift of a small plastics toy. 購買這份早餐食物的人都可得到一件免費(fèi)的塑料玩具。③ this is a free ticket for the concert. 這是一種免費(fèi)的音樂會(huì)入場(chǎng)券。
【注】free還可作“空閑的”“未被利用的”解。如：① "is this seat free?" "yes, no one is using it."“這座位沒人坐嗎?”“是的，沒人坐�！� ② she picked it up with her free hand. 她用閑著的那只手把它撿起來。③ the doctor will be free in ten minutes. can you wait that long? 醫(yī)生十分鐘后有空，你能等一下嗎?
【注】 free from/of意為“不受…影響的”。如：① the old lady is never free from/of pain. 那位老太太從未擺脫過病痛。② she was free from all blame for the accident. 那次事故完全不能怪她。
【注】free還可作副詞用，意為“自由地”“免費(fèi)地”“松動(dòng)地”。如：① don't let the dog ran free on the main road. 別讓那條狗在大街上隨便亂跑。② babies are allowed to travel free on buses.嬰兒可免費(fèi)乘公共汽車。③ two of the screws in this old wooden door have worked themselves free.那扇舊木門上的兩顆螺絲釘松動(dòng)了。
【注】free還可作動(dòng)詞用，意為“使自由”“免除”“解放”“使松動(dòng)”。如：① the little boy freed the bird from its cage.那小男孩把籠子里的鳥放了。② i need to go out. can you free me for an hour? 我需要出去一下，你能讓我離開一小時(shí)嗎? ③ at last he freed himself from debt. 他終于還清了債務(wù)。
【注】 freely也是副詞，但與free作副詞時(shí)解釋不同。freely意為“主動(dòng)地…”“慷慨地”“坦率地”“自由地”。如：① i freely admit that what i said just now was wrong. 我主動(dòng)承認(rèn)剛才我說的話錯(cuò)了。② he gives his time freely to help the school. 他用自己的大量時(shí)間來為學(xué)校辦事。③ you can speak quite freely in front of me. i shan't tell anyone what you say. 你有話可坦率地對(duì)我說，我不會(huì)告訴任何人。
