①can you repair my watch by friday? 你能在星期五之前把表修好嗎？（句中時(shí)間最遲到星期五，動(dòng)詞可以是瞬間的，也可以是持續(xù)的）
ⅱ.till/untill“直到”強(qiáng)調(diào)動(dòng)作的持續(xù)狀態(tài)，直到將來的某一時(shí)刻為止。如：
i shall go on working till/untill next monday. （此種情況只能用于肯定句中動(dòng)詞必須是延續(xù)的）
當(dāng)untill與not連用時(shí)，意為“直到… …才”，主句謂語(yǔ)動(dòng)詞必須是非延續(xù)性的。如：
i don’t go to bed untill/till you come.
§110 call on/ visit/ go to see/ drop in
ⅰ.四者都有“訪問”的意思，但是vist較為正式，可用于訪問人，也可用于訪問地方。如：
i visited my aunt in bejing in the summer holidays. 暑假我探望了在北京的姨媽。
ⅱ.call on有時(shí)可代替visit，但只限于人。訪問某地方則用call at。如：
we called on prefessor liu a few days ago. 前幾天我們拜訪了劉教授。
ⅲ.go to see為普通用語(yǔ)，一般用于人。如：
tom is ill. let’s go to see him after school.湯姆病了，我們放學(xué)后去看他吧。
ⅳ.drop in特指順路探訪，多用于口語(yǔ)。如：
would you like to drop in and have a cup of tea? 你順便來喝杯茶，好嗎？
§111 calm/ quiet
ⅰ.calm的意思是平靜的、鎮(zhèn)靜的。用以指天氣、海洋等時(shí)，表示一種無(wú)風(fēng)無(wú)浪的平靜狀態(tài)；用以指人時(shí)，表示鎮(zhèn)靜而不激動(dòng)的心情。如：
① the sea is now calm. 海上現(xiàn)在風(fēng)平浪靜。
② he remained calm. 他保持鎮(zhèn)靜。
ⅱ.quiet的意思是安靜的、寂靜的，指沒有什么動(dòng)態(tài)，沒有什么聲音，尤指沒有騷亂的一種安靜狀態(tài)。如：
① everything was quiet. 萬(wàn)籟俱寂。
② ask them to keep quiet. 叫他們保持安靜。
§112 can/ be able to
ⅰ. can “能”表過去或現(xiàn)在“能力所及”時(shí)，與be able to 通用。如：
① he can / is able to speak german. 他會(huì)說德語(yǔ)。
② he could / was able to run very fast when i was a boy. 我小時(shí)候就跑得很快。
ⅱ. be able to 的過去時(shí)還可表一種“經(jīng)過努力做到了”的意思。而can的過去時(shí)則沒有這種意義。如：
he started late, but he was able to catch the eight o’clock train. 他出發(fā)晚了，但他還是趕上了八點(diǎn)鐘的火車。
ⅲ.can 通常只用于上述兩種時(shí)態(tài)，而be able to 則可用于各種時(shí)態(tài)。如：
he has not been able to come since he got hurt. 自從受傷以后，他就一直未能前來。
ⅳ. 在表猜測(cè)時(shí)，只能用can，而不能用be able to ，如：
that can’t be your bag. 那不可能是你的書包。
§113 can/ may
ⅰ.can的意思是能、會(huì)；可能。在正式用語(yǔ)中can通常是指能力而言。它也可以表示可能性。在非正式用語(yǔ)和口語(yǔ)中can經(jīng)常用以表示“允許”的意思，特別在疑問句和否定句中。如：
① can you swim across the yangzi river? 你能橫渡揚(yáng)子江嗎？
② he can speak english. 他會(huì)說英語(yǔ)。
③ i can’t come at that time. 我不能在那個(gè)時(shí)候來。
④ can the news be true? 這消息會(huì)是真的嗎？
