§122 choose/ select/ elect
ⅰ.choose的意思是“選擇、挑選”，通常指在所提供的對象中，憑個人的判斷力進行選擇。如：
① you may choose from among them the one you like best. 你可以從它們中間挑選最喜歡的一個。
② let me choose a book from among these. 讓我從這些書中選一本。
[注]choose后面可以接不定式，表示愿意、決定等意思。如：
i didn’t choose to go. 我不愿意去。
ⅱ.select的意思是“選擇、挑選”，通常指從很多對象中精心地進行挑選，往往指根據被選擇對象的優劣進行選擇。如：
① the finest products were selected and sent to the exhibition. 選擇了最好的產品送到展覽會去。
② they were selected from among many applicants. 他們是從許多報名者當中挑選出來的。
ⅲ.elect的意思是“選、選舉”，常指通過正式手續（如投票等）進行選舉。如：
they elected him chairman. 他們選舉他當主席。
這里如果改用choose/select，那就著重于選擇的意義，不一定是正式選舉，整個句子應為：they chose him as their chairman.
[注] pick 一詞也可以表示挑選、選擇的意思，含有仔細挑選的意味，有時也表示任意挑選的意思。如：
pick the best one. 挑選最好的吧。
§123 city/ town
ⅰ.city的意思是“城市、都市”，一般指大的和重要的城市（但在美國，每一個城市都可以稱為city）。如：
① shanghai is a big city. 上海是一個大城市。
② beijing is one of the oldest cities in the world. 北京是世界上最古老的城市之一。
ⅱ.town的意思是“市鎮、城市”，一般指規模較小的城市，常作country（鄉下）的相對用語。如：
① the town is on the bank of a river. 那個城市位于河邊。
② whould you rather live in a town or in the country?你喜歡住在城市還是農村？
§124 pleasant / please / pleased /pleasing / pleasure
ⅰ. pleasant 為形容詞, “令人愉快的” “令人舒適的” 主要指使人心滿意足,將快樂給予他人的性格、活動氛圍、狀態或場合，也可用于事物。如
① she has a pleasant voice. 她的聲音悅耳。
② the weather there is not very pleasant. 那兒的天氣不太宜人。
ⅱ. pleased 為形容詞，“感到高興”，相當于 glad 或 happy,后面可接不定式、at doing, with sth 或 that 從句。
① we are very pleased to see you here. 我們很高興在這兒見到你。
② i am pleased that they have dedided to come. 我很高興他們決定來。
③ he was pleased with my progress.他對我的進步感到滿意。
ⅲ. pleasing “令人喜歡的；令人愉快的”主語一般是物。如①she has got a pleasing voice.. 她的聲音很悅耳。
ⅳ. pleasure 是名詞，大多用于客套語中。如：
① i have had the pleasure of meeting your father before. 我以前有幸見過令尊。
② --will you lend me a hand? --with pleasure. 請你幫一下忙好嗎？ 好的。
