(2) prep “到…為止，在…之前” 句中謂語動詞常用完成時態(tài)，但當謂語動詞為be 時，多用一般時態(tài)。

  eggs are sold by the dozen.  cloth is sold by the yard. workers were paid by the hour. 
(5) prep 常與the 連用，表示觸及或抓住身體或衣服的某個部位。the young mother took the baby by the hand.
(6) adv 靠近  he stole the money when no one was by.   he lives near by. 
(7) prep 在…旁邊  he would always sit by the side of the river fishing. the telephone is by the window.
(8)置于不帶the的名詞前，表原因，意為“由于”they met by chance/accident.
(9). 意為“在…期間；處于某種狀況”they travel by day.他們白天旅行。
(10). 表示程度、數(shù)量的相差。the bullet missed him by two inches.  house prices went up by 10%.
(11). 意為“從…看，按照”by my watch it is two o’clock. 我的表是兩點鐘。 由by 組成的詞組： (1) by accident =by chance 偶然地(2) by no means 決不 (3) by oneself單獨 (4) learn…by heart熟記 (5) by then 到那時(6) one by one一個接一個 (7) side by side肩并肩地 (8) little by little 一點一點地，逐漸地(9) by mistake 弄錯，失誤  he took my umbrella by mistake.
