1.thanksgiving thanksgiving is a very imp—ortant cuhural festival in the united states.it takesplace on the last thursday of november and itspurpose,as its name suggests,is to give thanks for allthat we have.the mayflower pilgrims held the veryfirst thanksgiving.after having barely survived aharsh winter and following an abundant harvest,theydecided to hold a feast to give thanks.largely redo-lent of the traditional english harvest festival,a sig-nifieant and unique element to this original thanks-giving was that the pilgrims invited 9 1 local indiansto whom they felt indebted for assisting their survivalin that first bleak year.this spirit of friendship didnot last,however,a few years on and the pilgrimswere condemning the indians as heathen.nowadays,the festival is a chance for family to get together andenjoy the traditional food such as roast turkey andpumpkin pie that no thanksgiving could do without.
