the first period
a point and say.
presentation
1 bring in a fan, a scarf or warm hat, an umbrella and a raincoat.
2 (books closed.) point outside the window. say it’s hot/cold/dry/wet today. mime being hot, cold, wet or dry. point to the scarf, hat, fan or umbrella, saying it’s hot/cold/wet. i want a … note that we do not usually comment on dry weather, unless it has just stopped raining. we can, however, say it’s dry. i don’t want an umbrella.
3 write the words hot/cold/wet/dry on the board. point to one of the words and say it’s hot. ask a pupil to come out and give me the fan, scarf, hat, umbrella or raincoat.
4 pick up one of the objects and ask the pupils to make a sentence, e.g. pick up the umbrella and encourage the pupils to say it’s wet.
5 show transparency. play the pupil’s book cassette and point to the speech bubble. ask the pupils to repeat after the beeps.
practice
1 (books open.) show transparency. introduce jenny and tell the pupils she is from england. she is showing pat photos of her home.
2 revise words from clothes from the previous unit and from book 4 unit 9 (dress, shirt, t-shirt, coat, hat, skirt, scarf). ask the pupils to make sentences about what the people are wearing.
3 point to the objects, e.g. the hat and ask the pupils what’s this? get them to answer it’s a hat. say yes, it’s cold. she’s wearing a hat. point to other objects and ask them to make similar sentences.
4 read jenny’s speech bubble and tell the pupils to work in pairs to work out the sentences to describe the other photos.
more to do
start keeping a class weather diary for a week. write the names of the days of the week across the top of a large piece of paper. each day, look out the window and ask the pupils to make a sentence about the weather. write cue words and ask the pupils to draw symbols for the different weather (e.g. sun for hot, umbrella for rain).

weather和sweater的讀音和拼寫學生容易弄錯。還有要提醒他們man和woman的復數形式是men和women。

1 bring in a sweater, a raincoat and an umbrella. if the weather is hot, put on the sweater. if the weather is cold, take off the sweater before i go to class.
2 (books closed.) look out of the door and ask the pupils what’s the weather like?
