pardon? 或beg pardon? 或i beg your pardon? 這三句都表示“請再說一遍”的意思，但注意它們都要使用升調。i beg your pardon. 用降調，意思是“請原諒、請寬恕”。又：please pardon me for not arriving sooner. ★
know 是及物動詞，后跟名詞或代詞，意思是直接知道或了解人和物；know about/of 的意思則是間接了解或聽說某人和某物。比較：i have known him for a long time. 我已經認識他多年了。i have known about/of him for a long time. 我早就聽說過他的事。
more or less 意思是“或多或少”、“大體上”、“左右”，用于說話者的意見不那么肯定的情況下。it's an hour's journey, more or less. 大約一小時的路程。our working condition has more or less improved. 我們的工作條件多少有了一些改善。
however 作副詞表示轉折，意為“然而，但是”，可放在句中、句首或句末，而且必須用逗號與句子分開，不能直接引導句子。but 和while也是表示轉折的詞，但這兩個詞都是連詞，用于連接并列分句，but的語氣較強烈，while強調兩者的對比關系。例如：later, however, he decided to go. 可是后來他決定去了。jim is bad at physics, but he passed the exam. 吉姆物理不好，但是他居然及格了。i like tea while she prefers coffee. 我喜歡喝茶，然而她卻喜歡喝咖啡。★
come about意思是“發生”、“造成”，相當于happen和take place，沒有被動語態。如：how did this accident come about? 這個事故是怎么發生的呢？ sometimes it is hard to tell how a quarrel comes about. 有時候很難說口角是怎樣引起的。
at first, the language stayed the same句中的stay是連系動詞，意為“保持（處于）某種狀態”，相當于keep, remain, 通常后面跟形容詞作表語。比如: she isn't married. she stays single. 她至今未婚，保持單身。the shop stayed open till six o'clock. 這家商店一直營業到六點。they don’t stay long in the same place. 本句中stay是不及物動詞，long是副詞。
the same as… 和……一樣，如：he looks the same as before. 他看上去和以前一樣。please meet me at the same place as you did yesterday. 請到你昨天見我的地方來見我。與其對應的詞組是 different from…, 和……不同。如：city life is very different from country life. 都市生活和鄉村生活是非常不同的。my opinion is different from yours. 我的意見和你的不相同。★
just as后跟一個表示方式的狀語從句，作“正如”、“恰似”解。例如：she loved painting just as her mother did. 她喜愛畫畫，正象她媽媽過去喜歡畫畫一樣。leave everything just as you found it. 讓一切東西都保持原狀吧。
a great many “許多”，也可以說a good many, 修飾可數名詞，謂語動詞用復數形式。如：i'm quite busy. i have a great many things to do. 我很忙，我有許多事要做。a great many of them are out of work. 他們中的許多人失業。 ★
and so on 表示“等等”，一般都放在句末，如：they are interested in art and music and so on.
