1. have a talk with 與…談話
she had a long talk with him about her plans. that afternoon i had a serious talk with helen.
2. come across （偶然）遇見
i came across a friend in the street. 我在街上遇到一個朋友。in the library he came across a very useful book he needed. 在圖書館里他偶然發現一本他需要的有用的書。也可說run across。
3. cut up 切碎
等于cut something into pieces如：i am cutting this tree up. 我在把這棵樹劈碎。the meat should be cut up. 肉應該要切碎。對比：cut down，表示make something fall by cutting (砍倒)：i am going to cut this tree down. 我打算砍倒這棵樹。cut down還有其它的意思：cut down the cost 降低成本；cut down one’s diet 減少飲食
4. make progress 取得進步
注意progress是不可數名詞。i’ve made much progress in my english. 我的英語取得很大的進步。the boy made little progress at school. 這孩子在學校沒有什么進步。what rapid progress you have made! 你的進步好快啊！
5. before long 不久以后
beforn long = soon，如：he worked in the factory and before long he joined the army. 他在工廠工作，不久之后就當兵了。對比：long before = long long ago 許久以前。例如：the story happened long before. 這個故事發生在很久以前。the chinese had sailed to foreign lands long before columbus discovered america. 遠在哥倫布發現美洲之前，中國人就已經航海到過許多外國國土。
6. move on 繼續移動
on 是副詞，意思是without stopping，例如：we walked on although we were very tired. 雖然我們非常疲勞，可我們仍繼續走著。we had thought they would leave, but they stayed on. 我們以為他們要離開了，但他們卻繼續呆著沒走。
7. keep on doing sth. 繼續做某事
連續不斷地做某件事, 強調一種活動不間斷，著重指動作的多次反復例如：in the years that followed, marx kept on studying english and using it. 在這之后的歲月里，馬克思繼續學習英語、使用英語。he kept on phoning me, but i really didn't want to talk to him. 他老是不斷地打電話給我,但我實在是不想跟他說話。keep doing sth. 也是繼續做某事的意思，如: why did he keep laughing? 他干嘛不停地笑? 注：keep doing 強調動作的持續性，keep on doing 強調動作的反復性，帶有強烈的感情色彩，如：it kept raining for three weeks. 天連續下了三周的雨。 don’t keep on asking the same question. 不要反復問這一個問題。
8. translate … into … 把…譯成…
will you please translate this article from french into english? 請把這篇文章從法文譯成英文。又：how would you translate his silence? 你對他的沉默作何解釋？translate ideas into actions 把思想變為行動。名詞是translation
