thousands of…“成千上萬”；hundreds of…“成百上千”；tens of thousands of …數十萬；millions of…“千百萬的，無數的”，dozens of… “好幾十或成打的”。注意: 用這種不具體的數字表示時，hundred，thousand，million 等詞用復數形式，后面搭配of。但如果指具體數字時，不加 s，如：two thousand trees / about ten thousand people
free ①免費 he gave me two free tickets for the concert. 他給了我兩張免費的音樂會票。②空閑的 he enjoys collecting stamps in his free time. ③自由的you are not free to enter the chemistry lab. 你們不能隨便進入化學實驗室。又：“is this seat free?” “yes, no one is using it.” free也可作動詞用：she freed the bird from the cage. (釋放)
knock down撞倒，打倒，如：he knocked down a child when he hurried off. 他急著離去的時候撞倒了一個孩子。he was knocked down by a car. knock 注意knock的其它意思：please knock at/on the door before entering.
rule ①名詞“規則，規定，條例”，有很多搭配，如：carry out a rule 執行規則；follow the rule 遵守規則；keep the rule 遵守規則；work out a rule 制定規則；break a rule 違犯規則。 ②動詞“統治，控制”，如：rule (over) a country 統治國家；rule one’s feelings控制感情。又：ruler 直尺、統治者
operate ①vt.開動；運行do you know how to operate the tractor? 你會開拖拉機嗎？②vt.實施；負責；經營this programme was operated mainly by women. 這個計劃主要由婦女來實施。③vi.開刀，動手術the doctor will have to operate on him at once. ★
percent 注意謂語動詞的數：over seventy percent of the area is covered with trees. 這個地區百分之七十以上被樹所覆蓋。about sixty-five percent of the students in our class are league members. 我們班大約百分之六十五的學生是團員。 ★
purpose目的；意圖，如：for what purpose do you want to go to canada? / he came here for the purpose of seeing you. on purpose 故意地、特意：the boy did it on purpose, of course.

language tip
how long have you had it? 你買了多久了? 錯：how long have you bought it? how long 指行為或狀態持續多久，常與延續性動詞連用，不能用表示“瞬間完成的短暫動作”的動詞作謂語�，F在完成時是表示持續的狀態，像這樣不與持續性時間狀語連用的非延續性動詞還有 come、go、join、leave、die、get to know、borrow等。如：how long may i keep the book? 這本書我能借多久？又：注意how long與how soon的區別：“how soon can you finish the project?” “in two weeks.” ★
take a look at (have a look at) 看一眼, 瞧一瞧。如：i took a quick look at the picture. 我迅速看了一眼這張照片。i took one look at the coat and decided to buy it. 我看了看這件外套并決定買下它。take與一個名詞連用（此名詞與動詞同形），表示做某一個動作，常�？梢院蚳ave互換。如：take/have a rest 休息；take/have tea 喝茶；take/have a rest 休息；take/have a break 暫停；take/have a bath 洗澡等等。
