at first, the language stayed the same句中的stay是連系動詞，意為“保持（處于）某種狀態”，相當于keep, remain, 通常后面跟形容詞作表語。比如: she isn't married. she stays single. 她至今未婚，保持單身。the shop stayed open till six o'clock. 這家商店一直營業到六點。they don’t stay long in the same place. 本句中stay是不及物動詞，long是副詞。
the same as… 和……一樣，如：he looks the same as before. 他看上去和以前一樣。please meet me at the same place as you did yesterday. 請到你昨天見我的地方來見我。與其對應的詞組是 different from…, 和……不同。如：city life is very different from country life. 都市生活和鄉村生活是非常不同的。my opinion is different from yours. 我的意見和你的不相同。★
just as后跟一個表示方式的狀語從句，作“正如”、“恰似”解。例如：she loved painting just as her mother did. 她喜愛畫畫，正象她媽媽過去喜歡畫畫一樣。leave everything just as you found it. 讓一切東西都保持原狀吧。
a great many “許多”，也可以說a good many, 修飾可數名詞，謂語動詞用復數形式。如：i'm quite busy. i have a great many things to do. 我很忙，我有許多事要做。a great many of them are out of work. 他們中的許多人失業。 ★
and so on 表示“等等”，一般都放在句末，如：they are interested in art and music and so on.
american english has changed over the centuries, too. 幾個世紀以來，美國英語也發生了變化。介詞over在這里是表示時間的介詞，意思是“在…期間”或“直到…過完”。如：i have read lots of english stories over the years.在這幾年期間我讀了許多英國小說。
reason表示“理由，原因”，后面可接介詞for, 也可接why引導的從句，例如：do you know the reason for his anger? 你知道他生氣的原因嗎？(=do you know the reason why he is angry?)注意句型one of the reasons is that… 這兒的that引導表語從句，that通常不能省略，如：the reason why i was late for class was that i got up late. 我上學遲到的原因是因為我起床晚了。這里千萬不要用because來引導表語從句！★
bring in 意思是“帶進來”，引申義為“引進”、“賺得”、“有收入”等。例如：they brought in new technology from abroad. 他們引進了國外的新技術。they brought the experienced people in to help. 他們請來有經驗的人幫忙。
explain：make sth clear; show the meaning of “解釋;說明” i really don't know how to explain it properly. / 對：please explain this sentence to me. 錯：please explain me this sentence.
i practised writing chinese characters for homework. 家庭作業我練習了寫漢字。動詞practise 后面要接動名詞，如：we should practise speaking english every day. 名詞practice 不可數，如：it takes a lot of practice to be really good at english. 英語要真正學好需要大量的練習。★
