1. quick, turn the gas off. 快，把煤氣關上。掌握幾個搭配：turn the tv off. it’s time for bed.該睡覺了，關了電視吧。 turn on the light. 開燈。turn it down, please! it's too noisy. 關小一點，太吵了！turn it up please. i can't hear it clearly. 把聲音開大點，我聽不清！代詞總是放在動詞turn和副詞之間，而名詞即可放在兩者中間，也可放在副詞后面。
2. you might get burnt and you might drop the pan of burning oil. 你可能被燒傷，你也可能把起火的油鍋扔掉。might 表示假設，本句相當于if you tried to carry the pan out of the kitchen, you might get burnt … . get burnt 被燒傷，構成被動語態的助動詞一般用be，但有時也可以用get，如： my watch got broken while i was playing basketball. 手表打籃球時摔壞了。he got hurt in the leg when he fell down from the tree. 他從樹上掉下來，腿受了傷。
3. break the glass to sound the alarm. 將玻璃打破，讓火警器報警。sound an alarm / sound a note of danger發出警報/發出危險信號。這里sound是及物動詞“使發聲”：the bell is sounded every hour. 那鐘每小時響一次。sound還可作不及物動詞“聽起來”：that music sounds beautiful. 那音樂優美動聽。
4. don’t go to your room to collect your things, or you may be trapped by the fire. 不要到住室去取自己的東西，否則你可能被火封堵。collect 收集，如：the teacher walked round the classroom to collect exercise books. (收練習本) electricity fees for this month have not been collected. 本月電費還沒有收。
5. perhaps it was started by an electrical fire in the ceiling of one of the offices. 也許這是由于其中一個辦公室天花板上的電線漏電發出火花引起的。ceiling和roof的區別很簡單：ceiling指的是屋內的天花板，而roof指的是屋外的房頂。如：a light is hanging from the ceiling. 天花板上吊著一盞燈。there's a cat on the roof. 房頂上有一只貓。
6. he was the first to arrive and the last to leave.他總是到的最早，走的最晚。在本句中，不定式用作定語。
the past indefinite and past continuous tense 一般過去時和過去進行時
1. 一般過去時表示在確定的過去時間里所發生的動作或存在的狀態，也可表示在過去一段時間內，經常性或習慣性的動作。when i was a child, i often played football in the street.
2. 過去進行時表示過去某時正在進行的狀態或動作。過去進行時的主要用法是描述一件事發生的背景；一個長動作發生的時候，另一個短動作發生。as he was reading the newspaper, granny fell asleep在他看報紙時，奶奶睡著了。
3. 應特別注意兩個時態的區別：they watched the train until it disappeared. (一般過去時表示watch動作已結束) she was writing a book about china last year but i don’t know whether she has finished it. 過去進行時不表示write動作已結束) i don’t think jim saw me; he was just staring into space. (過去進行時表示過去某時正在進行的狀態或動作)
