destroy 毀滅、毀壞，如：the enemy destroyed the city. 敵人毀壞了這座城市。all the hopes were destroyed.所有的希望都破滅了。
be made from和be made of 之間的區(qū)別在于：be made from （由...制成） 制成品已經(jīng)變得看不出原料了，如課文中的土壤當(dāng)然不是樹葉的樣子。be made of 是指從制成品中仍然可以看出原料，例如：the bridge is made of stone. 這座橋是由石頭砌成的。the desk is made of wood. 這桌子是木制的。
sight ①情景；風(fēng)景john enjoyed seeing the sights in new york. ②視力；視野his sight was poor.他的視力很差。you must put it away somewhere out of my sight.你最好把它放在我看不見的地方。

表示目的可用to、 in order to、so as to或so that、in order that。①to、in order to、so as to＋動(dòng)詞原形，引導(dǎo)的是目的狀語(yǔ)短語(yǔ) ②so that、in order that引導(dǎo)的是目的狀語(yǔ)從句，構(gòu)成復(fù)合句，并且從句中謂語(yǔ)動(dòng)詞常與 can, could, may, might 等情態(tài)動(dòng)詞連用。如：he got up early to/in order to/so as to catch the first bus. 他早起為了趕上第一趟車。（注意否定形式：they hurried so as not to/in order not to miss the train.）又：speak clearly so that everybody can understand you. 請(qǐng)說(shuō)清楚一點(diǎn)，這樣每個(gè)人都能聽懂。the visitors stopped at xi'an in order that they might visit some famous places of interest. 游客們留在西安目的是看一些著名的名勝古跡。注意：in order to、in order that 可放在句首，so as to、so that不可。另外so that還可引導(dǎo)結(jié)果狀語(yǔ)從句，意為“因此，結(jié)果”，如：he was very ill so that he didn’t come to school. / he was so excited that he couldn't speak. 他太激動(dòng)了以至說(shuō)不出話來(lái)。★
then i'll water them to stop the soil getting too dry. 然后，我還要給它們澆水，以免土壤變得太干燥。stop 在這里作“阻止，攔阻”解，后面可跟-ing短語(yǔ)。如：you must stop her telling the truth. 你必須阻止她說(shuō)出真相。 還有stop sb from doing結(jié)構(gòu)，如：the rain stopped me from going to school. 大雨使我沒能去上學(xué)。（另外：keep sb from doing也有阻止某人做某事的意思。） ★
do you have to feed plants like you feed chickens? 你得要像喂小雞那樣去喂幼苗嗎？like在這里是作連詞，相當(dāng)于as，意思就是“如同，好像”，連接方式狀語(yǔ)從句。不過like的這種用法一般用在口語(yǔ)中，正式的書面語(yǔ)還是用as。如：i failed like you had expected. 就像你預(yù)料的那樣，我失敗了。
feed 既可作及物動(dòng)詞，也可作不及物動(dòng)詞, 意思是“喂養(yǎng)，給…提供食物”，它可以組成的短語(yǔ)有：①feed on 以…為主食：sheep feed on grass. 羊以草為食。②feed sb. on/with sth.或feed sth.to sb. 用…喂養(yǎng)：we feed the cat on fish. 我們用魚喂貓。③feed oneself 自己吃東西。the child is old enough to feed himself. 這孩子大了可以自己吃飯了。又：he fed the tape into the recorder.
