注意fall的詞性：prices are falling. 價格在下跌。there was a fall in the price of vegetables last week. 蔬菜的價格上周跌了。
8. around 1850, a terrible disease hit the potato crop, and potatoes went bad in the soil. 大約1850年，一場可怕的病害襲擊了馬鈴薯，因而馬鈴薯在地里變壞了。成千上萬的人死于饑餓。
掌握這里hit的用法：“襲擊；遭受”，如：a powerful earthquake hit the city. 一次強烈地震襲擊了這個城市。the area was often hit by flood. 這地區經常遭受水災。
9. although many families became separated, people still kept in touch with each other. 雖然許多家庭妻離子散了，但是人們仍然互相保持聯系。
掌握separate的用法：①形容詞“各自的、分開的”，如：the children sleep in separate beds. 孩子們都睡在各自的床上。this word has three separate meanings. 這個單詞有三種不同的意思。②動詞，表示分割開來，通常后面會跟上"from"：he separated the big eggs from the small ones.他把大蛋和小蛋區分開來。this patient should be separated from the others. 這個病人應該隔離。注意：separate 側重指把原來連在一起或靠近的人或物分開，divide" 側重于把一整體分成若干部分。
10. most irish people go to church every sunday and the church plays an important part in people's lives. 大多數愛爾蘭人每個星期天都去做禮拜。教堂在人們的生活中起到重要的作用。go to church 的意思是“做禮拜”。
11. they also get together to read their own poems to each other. 他們還聚在一起，互相朗誦自己寫的詩歌。詞組get together 聚首、歡聚：let’s get together for lunch next sunday. 我們下周聚會吃頓午餐吧。又：we had a little get-together to celebrate his birthday. 我們為慶祝他的生日開了一個小型聯歡會。

1. be busy with 忙于…
mother is always busy with her housework。母親通常都是忙著做家務活。we are always busy with preparation for the exams.我們總是忙于準備考試。busy 也常用于 be busy doing sth結構，有“忙于干某事”的意思。如：mike has no time to play football now because he is busy doing his homework. 麥克現在沒有時間踢足球，因為他正忙于做家庭作業。
2. knock … out of 從...中敲出…
the sudden blow knocked two teeth out of his mouth. 這突然的一擊把兩顆牙從他嘴里打出來了。the diamond was knocked out of the ring when i dropped it. 我摔掉戒指的時候，鉆石被敲出來了。注意knock的其它搭配：knock at/on 敲、打：please knock at/on the door before entering. 進門之前請先敲敲門。knock over 撞翻：don't knock over the bowl of water. 別把那碗水打翻了。knock down 撞倒：the cow knocked down a small tree and ate the leaves. 那頭牛把一棵小樹撞倒了，把樹葉吃了。knock against 撞擊：the child knocked his head against the wall. 那小孩把頭撞在墻上了。
