6. i hope very much that he will be able to give a talk on a different subject. 我非常希望他能就另一個不同的課題作個報告。give a talk on… 作關于…的報告：the doctor gave a talk on family health. 那位醫生作了關于家庭保健方面的報告。
7. everybody knows that you're an expert on the subject. 大家都知道你是這一課題方面的專家。an expert on … 是…的專家；an expert in/at …表示擅長某技能：his father is an expert on foreign affairs. 他是一個國際事務專家。he is an expert at medicine. 他精通醫學。
8. the organizer had put dr p baker's name on the list of speakers, but when the invitation list was being done, someone had made a careless mistake and had written 'dr d baker' instead. 組織者曾將p•貝克博士的名字列入演講人的名單,但是,在開列請名單時,有人粗心大意弄錯了,寫成了d•貝克博士。副詞instead(替代)常位于句末，漢譯時不譯出,如：today we won’t have rice for supper; we’ll take noodles instead. 今天晚餐我們不吃米飯，而吃面條。
9. i'm doing research in ent at lincoln college in tennessee. 我正在田納西州林肯學院從事耳鼻喉方面的研究。do research in/on … 從事研究工作：he has done a lot of research on that subject. 他對那個課題進行了大量的研究。
10. but dr lively was going to talk on that very subject today. 而萊芙莉博士今天要談的正是這個題目。這句中的very 是形容詞，就是、正是，表示強調: this is the very thing i want. 這正是我想要的東西。he is the very man i’m looking for. 他正是我要找的人。
model verbs
you must be joking! 你一定是在開玩笑! you can't be serious! 你不會是認真的吧! that may be so. 那也許是這樣。there must be some mistake. 準是出了什么差錯。
1. must作“必須、準是、一定”講，表示我們對某事確有把握的推論或揣測。而另外一個表示推測的詞 may/might 就比 must 在語氣上要稍弱一些，如：
i always meet him at the street. he must live quite near here. 我總在這條街碰見他，想必他就住在附近。i always meet him at the street. he may/might live quite near here. 我常在這條街碰到他，可能他就住在這附近。
2. must 表示推測只用于肯定句。疑問句、否定句中常用can(can't)。如：can he really be ill? 他真的病了嗎？ what do you think this invitation can mean? 你認為這份請柬可能意味著什么呢? she can't be a professor — she's so young. 她不可能是教授 — 她那么年輕。
3. 情態動詞 + be doing表示對現在正在發生的動作表示推測；情態動詞 + have done表示對過去的推測，如：he might be doing his lessons now. 他也許正在做功課吧。can he really be waiting for us? 他真地在等我們？it must have rained last night. 昨天晚上肯定下雨了。can she have told a lie? 她會說謊吧？
