they gave a piece of / some advice on/about our work .他們對我們的工作提出了一項/一些建議。we asked for his advice on how to complete the work with less time and fewer people. 對怎樣已較少的人與時間去完成這項工作，我們征求了他的意見。
10. he received his doctor's degree in april 1841. 他在1841年4月獲博士學位。
掌握degree的用法：①學位he was given a degree in law. 他獲得法律學位。②度 water freezes at zero degrees celsius. 水在攝氏零度結冰。③程度 i agree with you to some degree. 我在某種程度上同意你的意見。

詞組close with 以…結束，如：a letter often closes with a phrase “best wishes!”. 信函的結尾常常是“祝好！”二字。he closed his speech with “thank you, mr. chairman”. 他說了“謝謝主席先生”以后結束了講話。注：begin with 以…開始
12. 掌握下列單詞的用法：
不可數名詞 work 工作：it’s hard work, isn’t it? 可數名詞work 作品、著作：a work of art 一件藝術品 the collected works of shakespeare 莎士比亞選集 復數名詞 works 工事、工程：public works 公共設施 可數名詞 works 工廠：a brick works 磚廠 the steel works are/is closed for the holidays. 這家鋼廠假期停工。
動詞encourage 鼓勵：i was greatly encouraged by his words. 他的話大大鼓舞了我。the teacher encouraged me to learn english. 老師鼓勵我學英語。
動詞/名詞 limit 限制：the boss limited our holidays to two weeks a year. 老板把我們的假期限制在每年兩個月。there is a speed limit of 30 m.p.h. in towns. 城區車速限制是沒小時30英里。 limited 有限的：i only have a limited knowledge of the language. 我對這門語言了解得有限。
過去完成時
1） 概念：表示過去的過去，其構成是had +過去分詞構成。
2） 用法：
a. 在told, said, knew, heard, thought等動詞后的賓語從句：she said (that) she had never been to paris.
b. 狀語從句，在過去不同時間發生的兩個動作中，發生在先，用過去完成時；發生在后，用一般過去時：when the police arrived, the thieves had run away.
c. 表示意向的動詞，如hope, wish, expect, think, intend, mean, suppose等，用過去完成時表示"原本…，未能…"：we had hoped that you would come, but you didn't.
3) 過去完成時的時間狀語有before, by, until , when, after, once, as soon as： he said that he had learned some english before. by the time he was twelve, edison had began to make a living by himself. tom was disappointed that most of the guests had left when he arrived at the party.
