[ 問]此句中lay down是什么意思。
[答]lie down意為 “躺下”， “……平息下來”等。例如：
he always lies down on the ground whenever he stops. 他一停下來就總是躺在地上。
their quarrel finally lay down. 他們的爭吵終于平息下來了。
the winds and waves on the sea will soon lie down. 海上馬上就會風平浪靜。
7. i had fallern into a hole and was hanging on the ropes tied to the sled.我掉進了一個窟窿，正懸在連接著雪橇的繩子上 。
[問]tied to the sled 是什么結構？在句子中有何作用？
[答]這是一個過去分詞短語在句中作定語，相當于一個定語從句，修飾名詞ropes, 過去分詞短語作定語時常位于被修飾的名詞之后。又如：
today's computers are of much difference from tomorrow. 今早發出的信件她明天就可收到了。
而單個的過去分詞作定語常位于名詞之前，如：
the cold wind was blowing through a broken window. 寒風從破碎的窗子吹了進來。
8. if i keep lying on the ice. i would soon die. 如果我繼續躺在冰上，我會凍死的。
[問]keep doing sth. 是何意？
[答]keep doing sth. 意為“繼續做某事”，如:
the owner of the shop kept talking all the time. 店主一直在說話。
it kept raining for three days. 雨連續下了三天。
[辨析]keep doing sth. 表示連續不斷的動作或同一動作持續的狀態，而keep on doing sth. 意為：繼續做，反復做某事”，強調動作的重復性，如：
why do you keep on asking such silly questions?你干嘛老問這樣的傻問題呢？
she kept on working although she was tired. 她盡管很累但仍繼續干活。
值得一提的是，keep on 后只能接表示動作的-ing形式如talking，walking， crying等，而不能接表示靜止狀態的-ing 形式如standing, lying, sitting,sleeping等。如我們不可以說: he kept on standing for half an hour. 但我們可以說：he kept standing for half an hour.

[問]make a decision 怎么理解？give up, give in 和give out 有何區別？
[答]make a decision 意為“決定下來，作出決定，下決心”等，與decision連用的短語還有：came to a decision 做出決定； arrive at a decision 做出決定；reach a decision 做出決定；give a decision for 判決對……有利；give a decision against 判決對……不利；give a decision against判決對……不利；leave ... to the decision of 由……來決定（某事）；with decision 斷然，等等。
give up和give in都有“讓步；放棄”的含義；give up指行為或努力受挫或別的原因兒童主動放棄，可用作及物東西，跟名詞或v.-ing作賓語；也可作不及物動詞；give in 指不再堅持自己的行為或觀點等，而按別人的要求去做，一般作不及物動詞；give out意為“用完；耗盡；體力不支”，是不及物動詞。例如：the wind was strong and the waves were big, so he had to give up attempting /his attempt to swim the channel. 風急浪高，他只好放棄橫渡海峽的打算。
