當not only ...but also...連接兩個主語時，謂語動詞應采取“就近一致”的原則，與后面哪個主語保持人稱和數的一致。如：
not only the students but also the teacher is pleased. 不僅同學們高興，老師也高興。
not only he but also you are going there. 不僅他，而且你也要去那兒。

[問]怎么理解本句？they need to grow 在句中作何成分？
[答]本句中有一組連詞not...but...表示一種轉折關系。否定not后面的內容，肯定but后面的內容，意為“不是……，而是……”，他可用來來年界兩個結構類似、語法功能相同的句子成分。如：
he does not speak english, but french. 他不講英語而講法語。
it's not mine, but yours. 那不是我的，而是你的。
every day i went to school not by bike, but on foot. 我每天不是騎自行車而是步行上學的。
mary did not watch tv,but went over her lessons. 瑪麗沒有看電視，而是發復習了功課。
not the teacher but the students want to see the film. 不是老師而是同學們想看電影。
由上例句可以看出，這種句型的主語可以是人或物，not前可以是行為動詞也可以是連系動詞，但不要與not縮寫，而且not和but后喲啊連接結構相似、語法功能相同的句子成分。
此句中they need是定語從句，修飾nutrients，不定式to grow也可用作定語修飾nutrients。

[答]no matter可與what， who， which， where，when， how等連用引導一從句，表示“不管，無論”之意，在句中作讓步狀語。例如：
no matter what you say, i won't believe you. 管你說什么，我都不會相信你的話。
no matter when you come, you'll be more than welcome. 不管你思茅時候到，你都會受到非常熱烈的歡迎。
no mater how hared you try, you'll never lose your american accent. 不管你多么努力，你都不會講話時不帶美國口音。
no matter與what， who， which， where，when， how等連用引導從句時，同whatever, whoever, whichever, wherever, whenever和however（however后一定要家加上一個形容詞或副詞）引導從句時的 意思相同。其區別只是no matter...從句只能用作狀語從句，而whatever...從句除了可作狀語從句一 ，還可用作名詞性從句在句中充當主語或賓語，有時甚至是賓語補足語。例如：
