4. likely，possible，probable
三者均表示可能性，但意思的分寸有別。possible指
客觀上有可能，但往往含有希望很小的意味；
probable 比 possible 的可能性大，表示“很可能；大
概”，有實際依據或邏輯上的合情合理；likely 是從外
表跡象進行判斷，有可能發生的事。
lt is possible, though not probable, that he will come
tomorrow.
他明天可能來，但不一定準會來。
this will only be possible when scientists have learnt a
lot about the atmosphere that surrounds the planet.
只有科學家們掌握了這顆行星周圍大氣層的更多知
識時，這才可能辦到。
the probable calise of his failure was that he had been
too tired.
他的失敗大概是太累了的緣故。
she's very likely to ring me tonight.
今晚她很可能會給我打電話。
it isn't likdy to rain.
好像不能下雨。
possible 不能用人作主語，也不能與人構成復合賓
語。possible 常用 it is possible to do sth.；it is
possible for sb. to do sth.；it is possible that等句型。
is it possible to say so?
可能這樣說嗎?
[正] it is possible for me to do it.
我可能做那件事。
[誤] i'm possible to do it.
[正] it is possible to do this.
可能做這件事。
[誤] this is possible to do.
[正] he made it possible for me to do it.
他使我可能做這件事。
[誤] he made me possible to do it.
probable 也不能用人作主語或構成復合賓語。表示
某人做某事，只能用it is probable that 句型。
it is probable that the cost will be greater than we
think.
花費很可能比我們預想的要大。
[正] it is / seems probable that he will come.
他很可能來。
[誤] he is probable to come.
[誤] it is / seems probable for him to come.
likely 既可以用人也可以用物作主語。
he is likely to come.
= it is likely that he will come. 他可能來。
5. set up，build，found，form
set up 側重于把事物架起來或立起來，如建立紀念
碑，而且多用于抽象事物，如建立威信、關系、法制
等。
build 一般用于建造房屋、橋梁、道路等，也可用于抽
象事物，如建設社會主義。
found 意為“創設；成立；建立”，特指用基金創設，如
創設學校、圖書館等。
form “組成”或“構成”的意思，被“組成”或“構成”的
東西必須具有外形，或者具有一定組織結構。
a new telegraph line has been set up between the two
cities.
兩座城市之間架設了一條新的電報線。
the crystal palace was built in hylde park for the
great exhibition of 1851.
